but the warm weather starts today in the afternoon. and we may even see a few records this weekend. i'll tell you how hot it's gonna get in your neighborhood. >> we're off to a terrific start for traffic. no delays at the bay bridge toll plaza. so far no hot spots or accidents. i'll tell you about some construction that may be out there. >> great now but east bay commuters will have to find new alternatives after a. c. transit decides to make big cuts to nights and weekend service. good morning on this thursday at 5:00. thanks for joining us. i'm kristen sze. >> i'm eric thomas. in the news this morning bulldozers will fan out through the san bruno neighborhood devastated by a natural gas explosion and fire. officials say it's time to begin removing the demolished homes. jenelle wang is live in san bruno with more on the story. >> cleanup crews will start coming in at 8:00 this morning to clean out all the debris at this disaster site. they're expected to be here the next four to six weeks. the first job to remove close to

two dozen charred cars so they can get the heavy machinery in. then remove debris from the hot zones first. 34 homes to be cleared but could be more later. the cost is about 30 to $40,000 for each job site. for the victims that lost everything, still a lot of questions as the bills pile up. >> as far as insurance. >> what we all went through -- i don't know when that healing process starts to begin. we're still numb. >> as cleanup continues, water trucks will continue to water down the ash to reduce any toxic levels. the san jose county health department has brought in ambient air monitors to monitor the air to make sure the air is safer crews and residents living here. last night there was a last-minute meeting to discuss homeowners rights. attorneys and contractors were available to speak with residents. the state senator proposed a bill that would exempt these victims from paying property

taxes. it would allow them to deduct income lost on their taxes. it was exactly two weeks ago today that this gas pipeline exploded destroying 37 homes, damaging nearly 19 others and killing seven people. reporting live in san bruno, i'm jenelle wang, abc 7 news. >> thanks a lot. officials from pg&e will appear before the california public utilities commission in san francisco. the puc is expected to vote today on a resolution that would order pg&e to pay for the investigation into the september 9th san bruno blast and to establish a blue ribbon panel to study the disaster. pg&e has said that money would come from shareholder profits, not rate hikes. the puc has already ordered pg&e to conduct leak surveys on all natural gas lines giving priority to high pressure and urban lines. >> we are following developing news in downtown orinda where pg&e is working to cap a gas leak. officials say a construction crew hit a gas main around 11:30 last night near camino pablo.

initially about a dozen homes were evacuated. but the residents have now been allowed to return. officials say the leak is near the auto ramp to eastbound 24 but they say a detour will be in place during the morning commute until the leak is fixed. just before 6:00 last night, a leaking natural gas pipeline forced the shutdown of several blocks in millbrae. the thoroughfare was for two hours. pg&e would not comment to abc 7 news. >> serious cuts for bus riders in the east bay. hammered out a plan despite protests for those who rely on the buses. directors voted to cut at least half of the weekend service as well as four of their six late-night runs. >> this is preposterous. what am i going to do on the weekend to get to church and. >> the board decided they had no alternative given our financial condition but to opt to cut at least about half of our weekend service.

>> a. c. transit has some issues with its labor union and says if it can work out an agreement, some of those service cuts could be avoided. if not, those cuts would go into effect in december. >> bart's proposal to build a three-mill elevated tram between the coliseum station and airport moved a step closer to reality. the transportation commission voted unanimously to approve $20 million in state money for the project but the sum represents only a small part of the project's estimated $484 million in total costs. it would replace the current air bart bus shuttle. it could begin in six months and take up to four years to finish. >> we're learning how much alameda prosecutors spent on the bart police shooting trial. the contra costa times reports the total bill for the d.a. totaled $144,000. the trial for former bart officer johannes mess early was moved to los angeles.

they spent $25,000 on airfare, $55,000 on lodging and another $17,000 in other hotel costs. mehserle was convicted in involuntary manslaughter in the shooting of oscar grant. >> the opening of a new campus in pleasanton. the clorox research and development operations. clorox remains in oakland but the employees being relocated spend thousands of dollars in oakland and it will hurt the city's economy. >> we'll have 500 less people walking around the plaza i would expect. difficult to determine what the financial impact would be. taxes are not based on the number of employees. so it would be more what's it gonna mean to the local retailers? >> the clorox employee move is scheduled to be completed late next year. >> san francisco will not be levying a fee on sodas anytime soon. mayor newsom said he's abandoned

report this morning. millions of containers of similac, the best selling formula in the u.s., maybe contaminated with bugs or bug parts. the recall's only for some of the powders, not the liquids. the fd a says there's no immediate health risk to babies. they have set up a web link where you can enter a lot number on a can of formula to see if it's been recalled. you can find that on our website, abc7news.com. click on "see it on tv." they will provide a full refund for any affected can. >> 5:32 now. later this morning the sound of heavy demolition equipment will echo through the san bruno neighborhood damaged by the natural gas fire. jenelle is live in san bruno with more. jenelle? >> eric, it was two weeks ago today when this pg&e gas line exploded and started this massive fire destroying more than 30 homes, severely damaging 19 others and killing seven people. in a few hours from now at 8:00

this morning cleanup crews will come in to remove all the debris left by this disaster. the plan is start in the hot zone. they have to remove two dozen charred vehicles to get the heavy machinery in. then they will clean up 34 home sites. the cleanup is expected to take four to six weeks. yesterday water trucks continued to water down ash to prevent toxic levels from going up. they want to make sure the area is safe for crews and residents living nearby. >> we know it contains levels of metal, potential asbestos, all sorts of other chemicals. we want to make sure as the material's handled it's not going to blow off the property and become a public health problem. >> last night a last-minute meeting took place to discuss homeowners' rights. attorneys and contractors were available to help. state senator leland ye introduced a bill to help fire victims that would exempt them from paying property taxes and allow them to deduct income loss from this disaster.

the bills are piling up from the victims. just to clear up their home site is expected to cost $30 to $40,000. insurance companies are expected to help but several lawsuits have been filed against pg&e. i'm jenelle wang, abc 7 news. >> jenelle, thanks a lot. we're continuing to follow developing news in oakland where police are investigating a triple shooting outside a nightclub. it happened around 2:00 this morning outside a club on the 1400 block. three people were taken to the hospital but it's unclear how serious their injuries are. bullets hit at least one car and a nearby building. investigators say the whole thing may have started as a fight at one of two nearby clubs. no arrests have been made. >> a new poll in california shows meg whitman and jerry brown still in a tie in the governor's race despite whitman spending $119 million of her. money on the campaign. state attorney general brown and ceo whitman came up with 40% of

voters according to the latest field poll. with less than six weeks before the election, 18% of those surveyed are still unsure which candidate they would back. that's up from 13% who were undecided during the last field poll back in july. >> bart is looking for additional revenue. its board is set to meet today to consider selling more advertising space at its stations and trains. among the options, selling the naming rights to stations adding television monitors at stations and trains and putting more wrap-around ads to raise extra cash. bart was one of the few transit agencies in the nation to end the fiscal year with a budget surplus but they need to develop new revenue sources to deal with future budget short-falls. what do you think, an eric thomas station. >> that's guaranteed to bring in money. right now eric thomas' monies is going out, college and stuff.

jaycee dugard and her two daughters may be spared reliving their ordeal in open court next month. nancy and her husband phillip have been indicted by a grand jury. neither the d.a.'s office or grand jury would confirm. it would eliminate the need for a preliminary hearing which would likely need dugard's testimony. they are charged withholding her captive 18 years. both pleaded not guilty. >> a man impersonating an officer. a woman was walking on east 14th street when the a man driving a black s.u.v. stopped. he jumped out wearing a tactical uniform and told her to freeze. he handcuffed her and stole $200 while pretending to do an i.d. search. police are warning the public to look for identifying information on the officer's uniform if they're stopped. >> a judge is refusing to issue a fast ruling on san francisco's request for a temporary
